two birds on one tree

two birds on one tree. one eats the fruit, the other watches.

there stands purusha, there lives prakriti
prakriti dances about purusha
once as fear, once as exhilaration
once as the tempting woman
once as the threatening loss

fear arises from the depths of prakriti
sorrow arises from its depths too
love, that foundation of relation, also lies here

binding purusha in these webs of emotion, clinging, suffering and aimlessness
prakriti has existed for aeons
it exists, yet does not exist without purusha
for aeons it has evolved
for aeons it has remained
for aeons it shall stay
at the end of it all, it shall dissolve
but purusha dissolves not

when all the chaos
all the sorrow
all the worry
all the frentic energy
all the great civilisations
cease to exist
purusha exists
refulgent
radiant
quiet
timeless
abiding in eternity

so have said the sages of the samkhya
so does see the wise man
one who sees not this, is lost and troubled
one who sees it, awakens

two birds on one tree. one eats the fruit, the other watches.

  1. Kaif,

An ordinary person might understand the opposite as prakriti being eternal and purusha not. One only gets to know the real meaning of these two words when he delves deeper into the true arth of these words and understands that how immature his understanding was….

two birds on one tree. one who eats the fruit, the other watches… the two facets thats what it is all about….

Somehow I am reminded of this para in a lovely ghazal sung by Jagjit Singh, though different in meaning but talks about the two facets of life

    “jeevan kya hai
    chalta phirta ek khilona hai,
do aankhon mei ek se hasna ek se rona hai…”

Yes.., its well said one who sees not this, is lost and troubled
    the one sees it, awakens

  2. :)

    nice lines

i think gulzar says it very well in the title song of filhaal, although the message is a little different:

    maasoom si hansi
    bevajah hi kabhi
    honthon pe khil jaati hai

    anjaan si khushi
    behti hui kabhi
    saahil pe mil jaati hai

    ye anjaana sa darr
    ajnabi hai magar
    khoobsoorat hai ji lene de
ye lamha filhaal ji lene de

    dil hi mein rehta hai
    aankhon se kehta hai
    sachcha sa ek khwaab hai

    lagta sawaal hai
    shaayad jawaab hai
    dil phir bhi betaab hai

    ye sukoon hai to hai
    ye junoon hai to hai
    khoobsoorat hai ji lene de
ye lamha filhaal ji lene de

  3. The knowledge and its manifestation go hand-in-hand. Realization dawns when purusha and prakriti exist in balance and not just one.

like… when the same bird eats a fruit and the same bird also watches this.

  4. hmmmm… interesting thought
