The Messenger’s Death

“Muslims! Let those who worshipped Muhammad know that Muhammad is now dead! As for those who worshipped Allah, let them know that Allah is alive and does not die.”

–  Abu Bakr announcing the death of the Prophet to the crowd outside the latter’s house (Medina, 632 AD / 10 AH)

One man’s life had punctuated history, ending one era and starting another.

In two harsh lines, the Prophet’s companion summed up Islam’s message – absolute submission to the one Transcendent reality, not to anyone else or anything else, be it our lovers, our fears or our dreams.
