Do Naina aur Ek Kahaani

Gulzar wrote this song for the poignant film Masoom (1983). A lullaby sung by a mother to her two little daughters as she puts them to sleep,  the song’s words are those of a child and convey a deep sadness. We know that the lullaby is meant to pacify the mother’s heart more than to put the children to sleep.

One of my favourite songs by Gulzar, it conveys continuous sorrow, sorrow as a condition of life rather than a passing event in one’s life. It conveys this by addressing the helpless child in us who wishes someone would come, care for us, and tell us a story. A song about innocence with a style that is metaphorical and intuitive.

do naina aur ek kahaani
thoda sa baadal
thoda sa paani
aur ek kahaani
do naina, aur ek kahaani…

chhoti si do
jheelon mein wo
behti rehti hai
koi sune
ya na sune
kehti rehti hai
kuchh likh ke
aur kuchh zabaani
thoda sa baadal
thoda sa paani
aur ek kahaani
do naina, aur ek kahaani

thodi si hai
jaani hui
thodi si nai
jahaan ruke aansu wahin
puri ho gayi
hai to nayi
phir bhi
hai puraani
thoda sa baadal
thoda sa paani
aur ek kahaani
do naina, aur ek kahaani

ek khatm ho
to doosri raat aa jaati hai
honthon pe phir
bhooli hui
baat aa jaati hai
do naino ki hai
ye kahaani
thoda sa baadal
thoda sa paani
aur ek kahaani
do naina, aur ek kahaani

a translation..

two eyes, and a story
a little cloud
a little water
and a story
two eyes, and a story…

in two small streams
she flows on
at times heard
at times not
yet she goes on
at bit on paper
a bit in speech
a little cloud
a little water
two eyes, and a story…

we know her a bit
a bit we don’t
where the tears dry
there she ends
new she is, indeed
yet she is old
a little cloud
a little water
and a story
two eyes, and a story…

one night ends
and another night arrives
yet again, the lips quiver
with a thought once forgotten
it’s the story of two eyes
a little cloud
a little water
and a story
two eyes, and a story…
