hum ke thehre ajnabi

thay bohot bedard lamhe khatm-e-dard-e-ishq ke
thi bohot bemehr subhein mehrbaan raaton ke baad..

mehr – kindness

hum ke thehre ajnabi kitni madaaraaton ke baad
phir banenge aashna kitni mulaaqaaton ke baad

madaaraat – greetings; civilities

kab nazar mein aayegi bedaagh sabz ki bahaar
khoon ke dhabbe dhulenge kitni barsaaton ke baad

sabz –
green; foliage

dil to chaaha par shikast-e-dil ne mohlat hi na di
kuchh gile shikwe bhi kar lete munaajaaton ke baad

munaajaat – prayer

unse jo kehne gaye thay, faiz jaan sadqa kiye
ankahi hi reh gayi wo baat, sab baaton ke baad..

hum ke thehre ajnabi kitni madaaraaton ke baad
phir banenge aashna kitni mulaaqaaton ke baad

– faiz ahmed faiz

as blessed were those nights we spent together. so wretched are the days that follow.

when shall i see those unblemished fields sway? after how many rains, will our blood stains fade?

strangers, we have become today, restrained to mere greetings. perhaps, having exchanged a few more greetings, we may become acquaintances.
