a longing

ek aarzu

dunya ki mehfilon se
ukta gaya hoon ya rab
kya lutf anjuman ka
jab dil hi bujh gaya ho

ukta – to be dejected; anjuman – gathering.

shorish se bhaagta hoon
dil dhoondhta hai mera
aisa sukoot jis par
taqreer bhi fida ho

shorish – noise; sukoot – silence.

marta hoon khamoshi par
ye aarzu hai meri
daaman mein koh ke
ek chhota sa jhonpra ho

koh – mountain

aazaad fikr se hoon

uzlat mein din guzaaroon
duniya ke gham ka dil se
kaanta nikal gaya ho

uzlat – being carefree

lazzat sarod ki ho
chidiyon ke chehchahon mein
chashmon ki shorishon mein
baaja sa baj raha ho

shorish – sound, noise

gul ki kali chatak kar
paighaam de kisi ka
saagar zara sa goya
mujhko jahaan numa ho

goya – as if; jahaan-numa – like the whole world

ho haath ka sirhaana
sabza ka ho bichhauna
sharmaaye jisse jalvat
khalvat mein wo ada ho

sirhaana – pillow; bichhauna – blanket; jalvat – gathering; khalwat – solitude

maanoos is qadar ho
soorat se meri bulbul
nanhein se dil mein usske
khatka na kuchh mera ho

maanoos – friendly; khatka – fear

safa baandhein do jaanib
bootay hare-hare hon
nadi ka saaf paani
tasveer le raha ho

safa – line; jaanib – side; bootay – shrubs

ho dil-fareb aisa
kuhsaar ka nazaara
paani bhi mauj ban kar
uth uth ke dekhta ho

dil-fareb – enchanting; kuhsaar – hillside

aaghosh mein zameen ki
soya hua ho sabza
phir phir ke jhaadiyon mein
paani chamak raha ho

aaghosh – embrace; sabza – greenery

paani ko chhu rahi ho
jhuk jhuk ke gul ki tehni
jaise haseen koi
aaina dekhta ho

mehndi lagaaye suraj
jab shaam ki dulhan ho
surkhi liye sunehri
har phool ki qaba ho

surkhi – redness; qaba – quilt

raaton ko chalne waale
reh jaayein thak ke jis dam
ummeed unki mera
toota hua diya ho

bijli chamak ke unko
kutiya meri dikha de
jab aasmaan pe
har su baadal ghira ho

pichhle peher ki koyal
wo subha ki muazzin
mai uska humnava hoon
wo meri humnava ho

pichhle peher – the last watch of the night; muazzin – one who recites the azaan

kaano pe ho na mere
dair-o-haram ka ehsaan
rauzan hi jhonpdi ka
mujhko seharnuma ho

dair-o-haram – a temple, sanctuary

phoolon ko aaye jis dam
shabnam vuzu karaane
rona mera vuzu ho
naala meri dua ho

naala – wailing

is khamoshi mein jaayein
itne buland naale
taaron ke qaafile ko
meri sada dara ho

dara – gong

har dardmand dil ko
rona mera rula de
behosh jo pade hain
shaayad unhein jaga de

– iqbal
