aahat si koi aaye

aahat si koi aaye to lagta hai ki tum ho
saaya koi lehraaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

jab shaakh koi haath lagaate hi chaman mein
sharmaaye, lachak jaaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

raste ke dhundhalke mein kisi mod pe kuchh duur
ek lau si chamak jaaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

sandal si mehekti hui pur-kaif hava ka
jhonka koi takraaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

pur-kaif: full of ecstasy

odhe hue taaron ki chamakti hui chaadar
nadiya koi bal khaaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

jab raat gaye koi kiran mere baraabar
chup chaap si so jaaye, to lagta hai ki tum ho

– jan nisar akhtar

Ecstasy is never far. Perhaps all we need to do is to stop grasping at things with our thoughts. In the silent, soft, misty hues that then remain, at every step is a reminder of the beloved, the source of all joy. All of nature calls his name, all the movements of the cosmos sing his praise. If only we would halt, and listen.

Jan Nisar Akhtar, with his extraordinarily delicate sensitivity, makes the same point with more effect than any rational tract ever would. And perhaps nobody but Abida Parveen could make the mystical roots of this poem amply evident.
