Scattered elements

zindagi kya hai anaasir mein zuhoor-e-tarteeb
maut kya hai inhi ajza ka pareshaan hona

anaasir – elements; zuhoor – appearance; tarteeb – order;
ajza – parts; pareshaan – scattered

What is life? A mere coming together of the elements
What is death? Their being scattered

Brij Narayan Chakbast
Two lines that reveal everyday life to be the illusion it is. A little change comes to be, a new wind blows, and the pieces of thought and emotion we had gathered into what we called ourselves, are scattered. They float away in this fresh breath of air, and life as we knew it no longer exists. A new life exists. New elements gather. Only to be blown away at another time. What is life? A mere coming together of the elements. What is death? Their being scattered.

Beneath life and death there is another. It survives not only the coming together and scattering of our emotions, of our bodies, but also the coming together and scattering of the physical universe. In the face of it, the rest is futile, worthless, a mere illusion.
